Currently Painting in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

.

For the past little while, I’ve been painting in beautiful Puerto Vallarta. There’s something magical about waking up each day to warm ocean air, wandering through cobblestone streets, and feeling the creative pulse of a town that seems to breathe art.

One of the biggest gifts of my time here has been the opportunity to paint at Galería Dante, the largest and most respected gallery in town. I’ve been working there almost like a resident artist, and none of it would have happened without Claire and Gena, the amazing women who run the gallery. Their support, kindness, and belief in my work have meant the world to me, and I’m endlessly grateful to them.

Painting at the gallery has been a completely different experience from working at home. Instead of spending my days tucked away in a quiet room, I get to meet people from all over the world — travelers, collectors, fellow artists, curious wanderers — and share conversations, stories, and sometimes even see the spark of interest that leads to a new home for one of my pieces. It’s energizing in a way that studio solitude simply isn’t.

Creatively, Puerto Vallarta has been a playground. I’ve found myself inspired to paint everything from everyday Mexican street scenes to sun-soaked beach moments. With the city being such a popular destination — especially with a large expat community — art is everywhere. The town is dotted with galleries, from small independent spaces to established institutions, each adding its own flavor to the artistic landscape. It feels like the perfect place for someone like me to grow, experiment, and connect.

And, of course, I can’t ignore one particularly fun perk: PV is famously welcoming to gay visitors. Which means there is no shortage of gorgeous men on the beaches — and yes, I absolutely indulge in painting those perfect abs, confident poses, and all the delicious details that make capturing the male form so enjoyable. Sometimes art is serious… and sometimes it’s just pure, joyful appreciation. 😄

All in all, this chapter in Puerto Vallarta has felt like a warm embrace — creative, vibrant, and full of possibility. I’m excited to keep painting, keep exploring, and see where this colorful journey takes me next.

Testimonials

It was almost 20 years ago that  I stopped in my tracks while walking past an art gallery in Taupo    There in the window ,with my name written all over it, was the most amazing huge painting  ..my “gay fisherboys “ as I call them    Without another thought I purchased the first of what was to become my personal collection of the art of Sirpa Alalaakkola.  My house has become a mini art  gallery dedicated to the most beautiful, colourful,  inspiring , artwork I know. I have ten huge originals and 3 smaller prints filling every available space   ( If only I had more walls! )   Visitors to my house wander from room to room in admiration.    The bright , vibrant colours of Sirpa’s work mean that my house has the most positive ,uplifting vibe.     She  has been so generous with the commissions she has painted for me    ....after twenty years I still stand and stare at my paintings.    I love them so much!  I regularly google her website to see what other beautiful works I am missing out on. Too depressing.  I want them all!!

I am so grateful to have discovered the art of Sirpa  Alalaakkola.    It has given me so much pleasure these past two decades.   To Sirpa......thank you !”

We first met Sirpa and her amazing art work whilst holidaying in the Marlborough Sounds. We had just completed the beautiful Queen Charlotte Track and decided to visit a few art galleries before returning to Christchurch.

Walking in to Sirpa’s gallery we were immediately blown away by her vibrant use of colour and the joy-of-life imagery. It was exactly how we were feeling after our wonderful four day tramp !

Unfortunately we weren’t in a position to buy a painting at that time but we both felt that one day we would. And here we are fifteen years later, the  proud owners of an original art piece by Sirpa.

Our love of playing petanque, our hillside Pinot Noir vineyard and the expansive views across the city to the Southern Alps provided a challenging brief. One which Sirpa embraced enthusiastically to create a work of art that superbly captures a feeling and a moment in time.

And what a pleasure it has been to work with Sirpa, a truly warm, generous and talented artist.

As soon as I saw the painting I immediately fell in love with it.  Since I work in the wine industry and we enjoy going to wineries to taste wines it seemed perfect.  It also became my inspiration for how I would propose to my now wife. I asked Sirpa if she could make a few changes to make it look a little bit more like us.Like painting the hair longer and as I don't think it would have gone down well asking her to cut her hair Haha.  My wife had no idea about this painting. For the next few months I searched many shops to find the right dresses and jewerly. The day before I went and bought the bread loaves,  grapes etc. At the winery I asked for a cheese platter and ordered her a red wine and myself a white wine. Every day we look at this picture not only is it absolutely stunning but it transports us right back to that day.We absolutely adore Sirpa's art. We look at her paintings and they bring us so much joy with the bright colours. They also transport us to many different places we want to be. We could look at her work all day.  She is incredibly talented and really cares about each piece she creates.  She has been a pleasure to meet. We can't wait to see what she creates next. Hopefully one day my wife and I will purchase a few more and start a collection. In the mean time we enjoy our painting every day.  Thanks so much 😊.
