In a quiet back alley of Chalai Market in Thiruvananthapuram, I witnessed something that felt both ordinary and sacred. A small workshop, almost hidden from the rush of the street, held a man shaping copper vessels by hand—an ancient craft still alive.

Every movement was precise. His fingers curved effortlessly around the metal, his feet anchoring the tools, his entire being absorbed into the act. It didn’t feel like he was working on the copper—the man and the material seemed to merge, as if he himself had taken on the warm, burnished glow of the vessels surrounding him.

The sound stayed with me: a soft, steady clicking of hammer against metal. Repetitive, meditative, almost like a chant. There was no urgency, only presence. A quiet devotion to craft.

This painting is my attempt to hold that moment—where labor becomes rhythm, and rhythm becomes something spiritual. The colors speak as much as the form: the deep, living warmth of copper, and the calm, balancing stillness of turquoise. Together, they tell a story.

In Kerala, copper vessels are more than objects. Rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, they are believed to purify and energize drinking water. But beyond function, they carry the imprint of the maker—the quiet dignity of hands that shape, repeat, and endure.

This is not just a portrai of a man. It is a portrait of becoming—of a human dissolving into craft.
