History does not have to be dusty, grey, and black-and-white. The stories of Kaakamo can glow with fire, strength, and the joy of life. In this world, the sea provided a livelihood, the village blacksmith’s forge burned red-hot, and new ideas were born with the same enthusiasm and curiosity that drive innovation today.
In Kaakamo, people worked together. They fished with large trap nets, cast cowbells in glowing molds, and boldly experimented with new techniques. The work was demanding, but it was also filled with pride, ingenuity, and the feeling of building something new. Kaakamo’s bells were shipped throughout Finland, and every successful casting was a triumph that people talked about long afterward along the village road.
The paintings in this series do not try to portray history as it appears in old textbooks. Instead, they imagine how it might have felt—fiery, energetic, and full of strength. The Kaakamo depicted here pulses with life, humor, and determination.
Standing at the heart of the forge is Kaakamo’s own Ilmarinen—inspired by the legendary blacksmith of the Kalevala. Illuminated by the blazing fire, he is young, powerful, and a maker of a new age. He does not stand bent beneath the weight of the past, but looks forward, surrounded by flying sparks.
The same humor, the same resilience, and the same fiery spirit still live on in the people of Kaakamo today.
Kipinöitä Kaakamosta
Historian ei tarvitse olla pölyistä, harmaata ja mustavalkoista menneisyytta. Kaakamon tarinat
voivat hehkua tulta, voimaa ja elämäniloa. Tassä
maailmassa meri toi elannon, kyläsepan ahjo hohkasi kuumana ja uudet ideat syntyivät samalla
innolla kuin nykyäänkin.
Kaakamossa tehtiin yhdessä: isorysillä kalastettiin,
kelloja valettiin ja uusia tapoja kokeiltiin rohkeasti.
Työ oli raskasta, mutta siinä oli myös ylpeyttä,
kekseliäisyyttä ja tunnetta siitä, että oltiin
rakentamassa jotakin utta. Kelloja lähetettiin
ympäri Suomen, ja jokainen onnistunut valu oli voitto, josta puhuttiin vielä pitkään kylänraitilla.
Tämän sarjan maalaukset eivät pyri näyttämään
historiaa sellaisena kuin vanhoissa oppikirjoissa.
Ne näyttävät sen sellaisena kuin se olisi voinut
tuntua: tulisena, energisena ja täynnä voimaa.
Kuvien Kaakamo sykkii elämää, huumoria ja
sitkeyttä.
Ja ahjon äärellä seisoo Kaakamon oma Ilmarinen
- hehkuvan tulen valaisema seppä, nuori ja voimakas, uuden ajan tekijä. Hän ei katsonut
menneeseen kumarassa, vaan eteenpäin, kipinät ympärillään.
